Morocco’s 2022 World Cup story came to a painful conclusion on Wednesday night when reigning champions France ejected them. Kylian Mbappe consoled his friend and club-mate Achraf Hakimi after the game, exchanging shirts in a heart-warming post-match moment.

French star Kylian Mbappe was delighted with his side’s victory over Morocco in Thursday’s FIFA World Cup semi-finals. But he was quick to comfort his close friend and Paris Saint-Germain team-mate, Achraf Hakimi. Defending his champions Atlas, he defeated the Lions 2-0 to reach Argentina in the final. It put an end to Morocco’s dream winning streak.

After the final whistle blew, Mbappe consoled his clubmate and Moroccan star Hakimi, who played a major role in the African national team’s dream World Cup.

Mbappe and Hakimi hugged and the two exchanged jerseys. Mbappe later released a tweet praising Hakimi for making “history”, adding that everyone was proud of him.

Mbappe tweeted: “Don’t be sad guys. I’m proud of you for making history.”

Mbappe has scored five goals in the tournament so far. He was involved in two of France’s goals. He was in scoring the second with a dribble hitting from close range, and free substitute Koro Muani ran past.

Morocco was the first African team to reach the World Cup semi-finals so far. The team put up a strong performance and was cheered on by a crowd dressed mostly in red and green.

France reaches her fourth final in her seven competitions. France becomes the first team to retain the trophy since Brazil in 1962 if they win on Sunday.
