Pep Guardiola led Manchester City to their fourth-straight Premier League title on Sunday.

It’s a new year for English football and Manchester City clinched their fourth consecutive Premier League title on Sunday. It was their sixth championship title in seven years. This is Pep Guardiola’s 17th trophy as Manchester City manager in his eight years at the club. He could win his 18th title for City, when his team will face Manchester United in the FA Cup final.

Since Guardiola won City’s title in 2018, apart from Liverpool in 2020, no other team has won the league. City won back-to-back titles with Guardiola in 2018 and 2019, earning a total of 100 and 98 points. Then, Liverpool ended their run, followed by City to regain the title again.

Last season, City won the treble (Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup). Guardiola also led City to three League Cups and the 2021 UCL Championship.

Guardiola has a contract with Man City until the end of next season, and his comments have fueled speculation that he could leave soon. Speaking to the media, he said: “The truth is that I am closer to leaving than staying. It’s been eight years, it’ll be nine. At the moment my feeling is that I want to stay next season. We talked with the club, we have time to talk next time because I will also see the players (to see) if they follow me, they follow us, for many reasons him. I will stay, during the time we will talk if it is quiet.”

But is Guardiola’s hometown the best in English history?

Liverpool won three league titles in a row from 1982 to 1984, and won the European Cup and three League Cups. From 1973 to 1990, Liverpool won a total of 11 championships and four European Cups.

Manchester United experienced two regimes; once in 1999-2001, then in 2007-09. 1999 was their peak, when Sir Alex Ferguson led them to the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup. Then, in 2007-09, United’s fearsome duo of Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney saw them win a hat-trick of titles as well as the UCL in 2008. They also reached the UCL final in 2009 and 2011.

Arsenal went undefeated for the entire league season in 2003-04 and earned the nickname “The Invincibles”. Meanwhile, Preston were the first team in England’s top flight to go unbeaten for a full season when they won the FA Cup in 1888-89.
