"What Has Led Sanju Samson Down": Sunil Gavaskar Underlines Reasons Behind Star's Inconsistency

Key Highlights

  • It seems that Mr. Gavaskar knows what has led down Sanju Samson from consistency
  • Former cricketer believes in Sanju’s abilities but feels he needs to improve on his shot selection

The former legendary cricketer, Sunil Gavaskar, is known for his polished behaviour and remarks online, sometimes heaping praises on cricketers like never before and sometime criticizing the hell out of somebody.

But here in this article, there is nothing criticizing news from the legendary but a suggestion the young cricketer, Sanju Samson should take on positive note. Mr. Gavaskar seems like have understood the reason behind Sanju’s inconsistency which is eventually leading him down. The veteran believes in Sanju’s batting abilities but says he (Sanju) needs to improve on his shot selection. Look at what he said,

“Everybody deserves more chance but you got to make the most of them. What has led Sanju Samson down, because all of us know the tremendous ability that he has, is his shot selection while playing for India. He looks to attack from the first ball and even in T20Is, there is an opportunity to get your feet going, get your eye…you know with the light and pitch, etc,”

In other words, what Mr. Gavaskar meant to say by suggesting the young cricketer that every ball coming to him is meant to be smashed out of boundary but rather to be cleared eyed upon converting it towards singles or so.

Now we must not be exact in interpreting the statement made by Gavaskar but somehow, he resembles the same.

The statement coming from Mr. Gavaskar comes in a time when the abilities of the 27-year-old batter, Sanju Samson, is being questioned and related to it Mr. Gavaskar also said,

“So, yes if his shot selection gets better then he will be so much more consistent whether it is for India or for his franchise. Then there will be nobody asking questions about his place in the team.”

Sanju indeed has been an underrated player so far. If you look at his career, you’ll find the cricketer have played in only 1 ODI, thirteen T20I as well as 138 IPL matches and question arises, Why just one ODI so far.

He is great player with great knocking abilities but what Mr. Gavaskar said about Sanju was absolutely right, that he needs to work or improve his shot selection criteria’s rather than just trying hitting every ball over the boundary.

Currently, Sanju is part of the Ireland vs India 2-match T20I series and probably would be seen in the match today held at the Malahide Cricket Ground Stadium, Dublin.
