a beautiful quote from Erich From, we think must be reconsidered by Cricket Australia for all its players, why? Primarily because of the threat that looms largely on the Big bash league from its competitors, ILT20 league.
To explain this, ILT20 league owned by majority of Indian stakeholders has made a whopping offer of AUD 700,000 to all the Australian players to ditch the Australian developed Big bash league. More interestingly, the offer comes in a time when the two tournaments have the same dates clashing with each other. Talking of the ILT20 Schedule, it officially starts from December 13th and lasts on February 4th, which eventually doesn’t sound music to the organizers of the Big Bash league. According to the Australian news channel Sydney Morning Herald,
As many as 15 Australian Players have been offered contracts worth upto AUD 700,000 a year to abandon the Big bash League and play in the UAE Twenty20 tournament In January
The Australian newspaper not stopping had more added to it stating,
The scale of the attempted raid on Australian players goes far beyond the threat of losing one player- David Warner – to the UAE because he does not have a BBL deal
‘Scale of attempted raid on Australian players’ were kind of words used by the Australian media to diminish the fact that their players are underpaid. Now to which comes the entry of the chief executive Nick Hockley with his counterpart Todd Greenberg who supported Australian players calling them not to be mercenaries, and have all the ability to
Take an informed and matured decision.
Hockley also added,
They do have this genuine sense of care about the game – if they didn’t, they would be mercenaries and take what’s in front of them
So you see, what Hockley tried to say when he called his players not to be mercenaries and have their choices to play anywhere in the world. Which also supports the fact that Hockley and Greenberg want a bigger pay for all its players including David Warner. Look at what he said,
I do know CA have to stay within the salary cap principles for any player and that includes Dave (Warner). But clearly, they’ve got to try to make the best offer they can to keep him here. It’s a balance of trying to make sure you’re attracting your best and there’s some equity in the system and the model, so that all of them have the opportunity to play and are remunerated accordingly”
So indeed, Greenberg supports that his players be remunerated accordingly but how, only the time will say.
Well speaking of obligations, there is no as such for any Australian player including Warnie (David Warner) who hasn’t played a single BBL yet, since 2014. According to the stats mentioned in TOI,
BBL highest payment till date from the draft has been D’arcy Short’s (Australian Player) for upto AUD 370,000
