T20 World Cup 2022: Mahela Jayawardena Points Out Key Reasons Why India Can Be Confident in Australia

Former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardena believes that India will clinch the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia which is scheduled to be held between October 16 to November 13. He recited the reasons on the ICC review- why India, the first T20 World Cup winner and runner-up in 2014, can be confident to win the T20 World Cup 2022.

The BCCI has announced the India squad for the multination tournament, and the likes of Jaspreet Bumrah and Harshal Patel made their comeback from respective injuries.

Jayawardena said that Bumhrah’s return would strengthen the Men in Blue. He stated,

He [Bumrah] is a big player and bowls well with the new death and in death overs. He will be successful in Australia [in T20 World Cup].

Bumrah last played from India’s side against England in the July of this year and he had wreaked havoc (6/19 of 7.2 overs) over English through his bowling with MohdShami (3/31 of 7 overs) in the first ODI of three matches series.

The 44-year-old also pointed out Virat Kohli’s return to form in the Asia Cup 2022 where he found his 1000+ days century scoring 122 including 12 fours and 6 sixes off 61 balls against Afghanistan in India’s ending match in the tournament at Dubai International Stadium on September 8. Kohli amassed a total of 276 runs in the event with 1 century 122 and two brilliant half-centuries 59(44), 60(44) with an impressive strike rate of 147.59.

He [Virat Kohli] has come back and very close to his storming run machine form. He has a big score before the World Cup 2022 in Australia, and will also be seen as a very plus point for India, Jayawardena added.

Former Sri Lanka batter said that team India have several top-class order batter including middle order likes- captain Rohit Sharma, Surya Kumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, and world-class all-rounder in middle order players likes of Dinesh Karthik, and Hardik Pandya who will be empowering India in the world Cup.

Ravindra Jadeja, the crucial all-rounder, is not a part of the India squad for the T20 World Cup 2022 due to injuries. During the Asia Cup, he got injured after India’s first match against arch-rivals Pakistan on September 28.

Though it is a challenge as Ravindra Jadeja will not be available for the team in Australia, but they [Indian selectors] have been fitted Hardik Pandya in his batting place that is also a confident sign for India, Jayawardena expressed his view over Jadeja’s place in the team.
