Sabalenka feels sympathetic for Ukraine players

Russia’s push into Ukraine continues to put pressure on the tennis world, with Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka saying on Friday that Ukrainian players are not the only ones feeling the pressure.

“There’s a lot of pressure between us,” said Australian Open winner Sabalenka after defeating Maria Sakkari in the final of the combined WTA and ATP Masters 1000 tournament in the Californian desert. But she added: “I still have this belief that who said before the event that she was struggling with guilt for the last time, but ultimately concluded that the situation wasn’t her fault. She again found herself in the spotlight this week when Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko withdrew from the game in Round 3.” Tsurenko recently told Big Tennis of Ukraine that just days after speaking to WTA Chief Superintendent Steve Simon about the ongoing pressures of the war, she had a scary emotional assault trying to get Simon out of support. Sabalenka said she believes the WTA is fair enough indeed about players from all countries.
