Mahela Jayawardena dissects India’s squad for the upcoming Asia Cup


Former Sri Lankan cricketer Mahela Jayawardena has expressed his views on some of the important players in India’s squad for the upcoming Asia Cup-2022 and shared some ideas that how would get the biggest advantage from Virat Kohli. He also suggested that a left-field partnering option should be available with Indian skipper and opener Rohit Sharma.


BCCI announced 15 members India squad for the Asia Cup which is scheduled to take place on August 27 and will continue till September 11. There will be six teams in the tournaments including Blue Jersey team. The two big names missing from the squad one is Pacer Jaspreet Bumrah and another is Harshal Patel. Both missing players are facing injuries.

Jaywardena, the current consultant coach of Sri Lanka national cricket team, provides some interesting thoughts about how India should utilize Kohli, who has been included in squad by the Indian senior selection committee. The Sri Lanka great further suggested a surprise option to open the batting with India skipper Rohit Sharma.

He said, There should be a left arm batter with Sharma for attractive opening pair.

As we know the upcoming Asia cup-2022 will play a vital role to decide which players will feature for the ahead T20 World Cup in Australia this year. The Selection Committee of all six teams which are set to battle in the Asia Cup is ready to eye on every player of playing XI. And then committee decide who will be named for T20 World Cup, added Jayawardena


What to do with Kohli: Kohli, who was rested from India vs West Indies T20 format series, has been included in the squad for Asia Cup. Kohli has only made four T20I appearances for his country this calendar year. He struggled for runs in the format as per his record in recent Indian Premier League (IPL), managed just two half-centuries and a total of 341 runs from 16 innings for Royal Challenger Bangalore (RCB).


According to Jayawardena, who saw Kohli up close during the IPL through his coach tenure of Mumbai Indians- The right-handed 33-year-old batter must be given every opportunity to find his best and storming form during Asia Cup by the Indian team coaches and authorities.


Jayawardena said that Indian team deciders also should continue their hope with Kohli that he can uplift him to travel to Australia for the Grand Championship of the T20 format.


It is unfortunate what Virat is going through right now at the moment, but he is a quality player, Jayawardena told Sanjana Ganesan on a program of the ICC Review.

I believe Virat has the tools to come out of it (the form slump). He has done that in the past as well and I’m sure he’ll come through this.”Class is permanent and form is temporary.


Earlier, Ricky Ponting, the former Australian cricketer also expressed himself in favoring Kohli though he’s in a little bit of bad form that is general for any cricketer So, he must be given every opportunity as he has the capability to show his stardom in the future.

Rohit Sharma (Captain). KL Rahul (Vice-Captain) Virat Kohli, Surya Kumar Yadav, Deepak Hooda, Rishabh Pant (WK), Dinesh Karthik (WK), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, R. Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, Ravi Bishnoi, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Arshdeep Singh, Avesh Khan.

Axar Patel, Shreyas Iyer and Deepak Chahar are the standbys.
