Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos has said he will retire from the Spanish club, but according to some Spanish reports, that may not be the case if his contract expires in June 2023 of the season.

Kroos retired from the Germany national team last June after losing to England in the knockout rounds at Euro 2020 but said the report was “interesting” as even he had not decided on his future yet. “Physically I feel very good, the pitch is going well, I am very happy,” said Kroos at Tuesday’s press conference ahead of the Champions League match between Madrid and Celtic.

“Sometimes it’s weird to read something you don’t know what’s going to happen. I’ll think about it next year, or during the (World Cup) break, I’ll think about it a little bit and decide little by little.

What I’ve always said and what hasn’t changed is that I won’t change clubs. I will always stay here and retire here but I don’t know when.

Kroos joined Real Madrid from Bayern Munich in 2014 after being sent off for the first time in his career in the 1-1 draw against Girona.

With his whites he won four times, with the German giants he won the Champions once in his league, in Spain and Germany he won three league titles and at the World Cup in 2014 he won the cup with the national team.

The midfielder is willing to wait until March next season for possible extension talks with Real Madrid. “Like me, the club is cool. I’ve been here for almost eight and a half years,” added Kroos. “In January, February, or even March we will speak quietly.”

Madrid can secure the top spot in the Champions League group with a victory over Celtic on Wednesday.

Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that striker Karim Benzema could join the squad after recovering from a hamstring injury, but Aurelian Chuameni was unprepared with a muscle injury.
