The BCCI has found its footing in big boy’s leagues like National Football League (NFL), National Basketball Association (NBA) and the English Premier League (EPL) after securing the media rights of IPL with a whopping valuation of Rs 48,390 crore (6.20 billion). To add to your surprise, the Indian Premier League has become the second richest league in the world after the world-famous NFL with IPL media rights worth $6.20 billion (2023-2027).

The winners of this deal were Disney Star, Viacom18, and Times internet with a huge sum of 23,575 crores under Package A category, Rs 23,758 crores under Package B & C category, whereas INR 1058 crores under package D category.

Now let’s understand what the four packages was for?

  • Package A – TV rights for the Indian Continent
  • Package B – Digital Rights for the Indian continent
  • Package C – Digital Package (Non-Exclusive – 98 Matches), and
  • Package D – TV & Digital rights of overseas from five regions i.e., middle east, North Africa, UK, US, Australia and South Africa.

How will BCCI be benefitted by this deal?

BCCI will be receiving 50 percent of the deal made which will then be used for the expenses related to the players, State associations, expenses of staff etcetera whereas the other 50 percent will be received by franchises which will be used to get divided amongst the teams

Matches Per IPL Season

  • IPL season 2023 – 2024 number of matches – 74
  • IPL season 2023 – 2024 number of matches – 84 (proposed)
  • IPL season 2023 – 2024 number of matches – 94 (Proposes)

How did IPL revolutionize in terms of revenue over the years?

  • In 2008 – Sony took all media rights for 10 years for whopping value of INR 8200 crores
  • In 2017 – Disney Star took the media right of TV and the digital space for 5 years for whopping value of INR 16,347 crores
  • In 2022 – Disney Star continued to be dominating in 2022 as well where it took the entire TV rights in India alone for INR 23,575 crores whereas the digital space or rights was given to Viacom18 for INR 23,758 crores, and the rest of the world space (TV + Digital overseas) was taken by Times Internet for INR 1058 crores.

So, you see how exciting the journey of IPL has been with surmounting revenue and becoming the second richest sports league in the world. On the occasion of such a big achievement, BCCI chief, Saurav Ganguly expressed it to be a proud moment. He also said IPL E-auction just showed how strong the game is in our country, INDIA. Mr. Ganguly tweeted,

“The game has never been just about money..it is about talent. The IPL e-auction just showed how strong the game is in our country..the numbers should be the biggest motivation for all the young players to take their ability and Team India to the highest level,”
