Italian Open: Holger Rune stuns Novak Djokovic to storm into the semi-finals

At the Italian Open, Holger Rune upset Novak Djokovic in a thrilling three-set match. A hard-fought 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 victory over the world number one secured his spot in the semi-finals for the 20-year-old Danish player.

Rune outlasted Djokovic in three sets during last year’s Paris Masters final, and he started the match strong. He made an impressive start by breaking Djokovic’s serve in the opening game. Demonstrating his aggressive play and delicate drop shots, Rune quickly raced to a 4-1 lead.

Djokovic appeared uncomfortable between points and admitted to dealing with a physical issue the previous day.

Despite missing a late opportunity to extend his lead, Rune closed out the first set. This left some sections of the crowd in disbelief at Djokovic’s struggles as a six-time champion.

In the second set, Djokovic took a mid-match painkiller, which energized him. The 35-year-old Serbian player roared back to life, breaking Rune’s serve and holding his own to take a commanding 5-2 lead.

However, Rune’s composure was tested when he lost his temper over a line call by the chair umpire. Despite a spirited fightback and a break of his own, Rune ultimately surrendered the set after a prolonged rain delay disrupted the momentum.

The decider began with fierce exchanges between both players, showcasing their ferocious hitting abilities. However, Rune capitalized on Djokovic’s serve, seizing a 4-0 lead. Demonstrating dominance on the court, Rune closed out the match by winning his own service game in a rare sunshine.

This loss means Djokovic will relinquish his top-ranking position to Carlos Alcaraz before the French Open.

Djokovic will now focus on the upcoming Grand Slam tournament. He will aim to claim a record-breaking 23rd men’s singles title, ahead of Rafael Nadal.

In other matches at the Italian Open, Casper Ruud and Francisco Cerundolo are set to compete in the quarterfinals later this week. In the women’s draw, Paula Badosa will face 2017 French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko. In addition, reigning Roland Garros champion Iga Swiatek is scheduled to take on Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina in a highly anticipated clash.
