The International Cricket Council (ICC) has revealed the prize money breakdown for the ongoing T20 World Cup in the United States and West Indies.
In a statement on Monday, the world cricket governing body shared that the total prize money for the marquee tournament is $11.25 million (93.5 Cr INR), of which the winners will receive $2.45 million (20.3 Cr INR).
This is a jump of almost $850,000 from the last T20 World Cup, in 2022 in Australia, where winner England took home $1.6 million. The tournament’s total prize money has more than doubled: from $5.6 million in 2022 to $11.25 million for this year’s 20-team tournament.
Finalists will win at least $1.28 million, while semi-finalists will lose $787,500, the ICC said in a statement.
In addition, teams that do not make it past the second round will receive $382,500 each, while those who finish between ninth and twelfth place will receive $247,500 each, and finally, the teams in grades 13 to 20 will receive $225,000.
“This event is historic in many ways, so it’s only fitting that the prize money for the players reflects that. Hundreds of millions of fans around the world will be happy with what we have. expected to be an out-of-this-world event,” said Geoff Allardice, ICC chief executive.
The edition of the T20 World Cup was the first to host 20 teams, divided into four groups. The top two teams in each group will advance to the Super-8, split into two groups of four. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals, which will lead to the finals.
In total, 40 games will be played in this edition, at nine sites in the United States and the Antilles.
