CWG-2022: Hockey captain Manpreet Singh announced as India's flag bearer along with PV Sindhu

The Indian Hockey captain Manpreet Singh’s name announced as India’s flag bearer along with PV Sindhu, the star shuttler of India and two times Olympic medal winner. Both champions will lead the Indian players at Birmingham Commonwealth Games. The announcement was done by Indian Olympic Association(IOA) on Tuesday.

          Singh, the captain of Indian Hockey team and bronze medal winner at the Tokyo Olympic 2020 last years, as the second flag bearer for the Birmingham CWG-2022. The IOA took the decision for Singh’s name according to CWG organizing committee’s rule that two flagbearers name for each nation including one male and one female must be for the Opening Ceremony.

The four officials of IOA, Acting President Anil Khanna, IOA Secretary General Rajeev Mehta , Treasurer Anandeshwar Pandey and Team India Chef de mission Rajesh Bhandari selected the PV Sindhu as the first flagbearer and Men Hockey team captain Manpreet Singh the second flag bearer. The IOA’ officials finalized the both champions names after following the whole process.

          Mehta, the IOA’s General Secretary said,

As with the three female shortlisted Indian athletes, their three male counterparts were all deserving candidates, but the committee decided that Singh be an associate flagbearer of Sindhu for Birmingham CWG because of his leadership performance. as he had already shown at Tokyo 2020.

Mehta added,

 He had played a pivotal role in our men’s hockey team as India clinches a sensational bronze medal in tokyoa

India will face their arch rival Pakistan on July 31st and 3rd match against Barbados on August 3.
