BWF World Championship 2022: S. Ranikereddy and Chirag Shetty win bronze, India’s maiden men’s doubles medal in World C’ships

Indian badminton star duo of S. Ranikereddy and Chirag Shetty won a bronze medal in the men’s doubles at BWF World Championship in Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium, Japan on Saturday. This is the first time that India bagged a medal in the men’s doubles category at the Grand World Championships. Earlier, India’s women shuttlers Gutta Jwala and Ashwini Ponappa had won the medal in 2011 at the same tournament, but in the women’s doubles category. So, this is the India’s first ever medal in men’s doubles, and second medal in the doubles category.

The world No. 7 Indian duo, which had won the gold medal at Birmingham Commonwealth games last month, unfortunately, lost the semi-final match against the Malaysian defending pair or Aaron Chia and Soh WooiYik. The Indian duo lost continue two sets after brilliantly dominating in the starting set as 22-20, 18-21, 16-21 in the 77-minute fight, and ended their BWF World Championships 2022 with a first-ever bronze in men’s doubles.

It was the sixth successive defeat against the Malaysian pair for S. Ranikereddy and C. Shetty, earlier, the Indian duo had lost the game against the same combination at the mixed team final of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham last month.

Badminton Association of India congratulated both Indian star shuttlers.
