Wasim Jaffer predicts the end of the road for Virat and Rohit before the T20 World cup

Legends on the verge of retiring from the T20I format of cricket

Two of the best batsmen of their generation, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are stalwarts of Indian cricket. Both have excelled for the national team over the years. But now, their form and age have been questioned in terms of their T20I future. While Kohli and Rohit are not currently selected for T20I, former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer believes Virat could still play in the upcoming T20 World Cup. In a conversation with former Pakistani cricketer Basit Ali on YouTube Jaffer admitted that doesn’t see Rohit as part of the Indian team at the upcoming T20 World Championship. But the chances are better for Kohli. “Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were resting (from T20Is against Sri Lanka and New Zealand) and looking at the big picture. The upcoming Tests against Australia, then there’s the IPL, and then the ODI World Cup. India may qualify for the World Test Championship finals. That’s right. Looking to the future, this game is for young players.

Almost the last path for Rohit in T20I

I don’t see Rohit Sharma playing in the upcoming T20 World Cup. Virat Kohli might play but Rohit Sharma will not play in the next edition. I think he’s 36 years old.” said Jaffer. As the ODI World Cup comes to a close this year, Jaffer feels the selectors’ priorities are to keep players like Kohli and Rohit fresh and out of T20 internationals.

“Viewing at the greater picture, it’s significant that they are psychologically fresh and prepared for the show in Australia” explained Jaffer. When asked if the young Indian team T20I Jaffer didn’t agree with Kohli and Rohit’s ‘leadership’. “I don’t think they need a driving force. They’ve played so much cricket in the IPL they don’t need anyone, leading them through the mid,” he said.
