India vs Australia Test cricket rivalry: Head to Head Stats – Border Gavaskar Trophy

India and Australia met against each other in 1947. The recently independent nation visited Down Under to face Bradman’s” Invincible”. Australia won that series without sweat and dominated the rubber, winning 6 series out of 7. India’s home Test over the Aussies came to Kanpur in December 1959.  It took them another 20 years (1979/80) to register their first-ever Test series win over the Australians.

It was a 2- 0 at home following a heart-breaking 2- 3 defeat against the Australian side in1977/78.

The Test series between the two sides got a name after the fabulous brace of Sunil Gavaskar and Alan Border as – The border- Gavaskar Trophy.

The Test contest between India and Australia took an intriguing turn in 1986. As the two sides played out only the 2nd tied game- at Madras- in the history of the format. It’s India, which has dominated the Test rubber. It has won 10 series out of the coming 20, including Down Under in 2018/20 and 2019/20. Australia, meanwhile, has won 6, while 4 series ended in a draw.

A one-off Test was offered in Delhi in 1996 to commemorate the Border- Gavaskar Trophy.

India won the coming edition 2- 1, which was like Sachin v Warne series in 1998. before Australia laid its hands on the trophy for the first time via a 3- 0 reach at home in1999/00.

Each series is throwing up memorable moments. Along with great individual feats and lots of heated moments with difficult situations several times.

India denied Steve Waugh from gaining the victory in 2001. Thanks to heroics from VVS Laxman and Harbhajan Singh. It was near to beating the Aussies in their den in 2003/04. Australia offered redemption in 2004. When they settled their series in India in 1969.

Also, the Aussies have managed 1 Test inIndia across 4 tenures. India, so, lost 1- 2 in a controversial series Down Under in2007/08, before getting whitewashed 4- 0 in2011/12.

Still, under the leadership of Virat Kohli, India broke the Aussie hedge in 2018/20. And they came up as the first Asian side to beat Australia in Australia. The 2020/21 stint started with the shambles of 36 each- out in Adelaide.

That was a bunch of injuries to India’s s first- choice cricketers. But the callers bounced back in stunning style. That was a transgress against Australia’s fort at the Gabba, but also script one of the topmost overseas Test series wins in history.
