Mumbai Indians batsman Suryakumar Yadav will miss the first match of the 2024 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) after failing a medical test and not being cleared by the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.

A source familiar with Suryakumar Yadav’s dealings with the NCA told IANS: “He passed the medical test on Tuesday. We will get another medical test for him on Thursday and if he passes, only he will be able to participate in IPL.

Mumbai Indians will play their opening match against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on March 24 and Suryakumar may not feature in the match.

Suryakumar, 33, has been out of action since injuring his leg during the South Africa tour in December 2023. The Mumbai Indians batsman went to Munich, Germany for the surgery in January.

In a pre-season press conference held by Mumbai Indians in Mumbai on Monday, head coach Mark Boucher said that he is still waiting for an update on Suryakumar Yadav’s health from the Indian team management. “So Surya is also under the control of the Indian cricket team. So we are just waiting for an update on that. I don’t like micromanaging. We have a hospital that handles all of these. Yes, in the past there have been some health problems.
