After two decades is a bit of a wait, finally, on Sunday, Sunil Chhetri completed his trophy cabinet in Indian football with Durand Cup at Salt lake Stadium in Kolkata.He was captaining Bengaluru FC (BFC) against Mumbai City on the night, took to Instagram to express his joy, and said that it might have been a long wait.

Two decades is a bit of a wait, but if it meant doing it in the blue of Bengaluru, then it was worth every season of trying. Durand Cup Champions- would have been a shame if an Army kid playing football professionally never had the chance to say this. Come on, BFC! the India captain wrote.

Chhetri, one of the best players to ever grace in national colors, get a free-kick in the early first minute of the game but it was The Blues who took a starting lead in the 10th minute through a fifth tournament goal by Siva Skathi. The long ball was delivered from deep in the BFC defense by Jovanovic, which put Mourtaba Fall under pressure with Siva on his shoulder. The Senegalese defender was in the end foxed by the bounce and Siva pounced on it with a measured chip over the keeper.

Following a downfall in the game, finally, the Chhetri-led BFC defeated Mumbai City by 2-1, and lifted the Durand Cup.

Chhetri is the most successful player in the history of Indian football, having represented India in 129 games. He is in the third position in scoring the highest goal in the world with his 84 international goals, and only behind the legendary Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi who have scored 117 and 86 goals respectively.
