Sumit Nagal wins the Austrian Open first round over Lukas Klein.

Paris 2024 Olympic-bound Sumit Nagal kicked off his 2024 Austrian Open with a hard-fought win over Slovakia’s Lukas Klein.

The 2024 Austrian Open, also known as the Generali Open, is currently underway in Kitzbuhel, Austria. Nagal, India’s top men’s singles player, faces Lukas in the round of 16 on Monday, July 22.

Sumit Nagal started winning and set a strong foundation with a 6-4 win in the first set. However, the Slovakian did not give up as he dominated Nagal in the second to beat the Indians 1-6. Lukas didn’t give Nagal any chance to recover and took the match to the third.

The third set proved to be very difficult, with both players selling games and keeping each other on their toes. Nagal was able to break Klein’s serve, leveling the score at 5-5 and forcing the match into a break. In the deciding period, Nagal was calm enough to win the match 7-3, ending the match with a final score of 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (7-3).

Sumit Nagal’s win over Lukas Klein advanced him to the round of 16 on Tuesday, July 23. Where he will face Spaniard Pedro Martinez. Martinez is the fourth seed and received a bye in his first round.

Nagal will bring his A-game to the court against Martinez, to build momentum and confidence ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympics As the only Indian to compete in the national team at the event, Nagal carries the hope of many Indians.
