Commonwealth Games champion Sharath Kamal and Manika Batra will lead the six-member Indian tennis team for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Sharath Kamal, 41, is set to make her fifth and final Olympic appearance. Meanwhile, Manika Batra will compete in her third consecutive Games.
Gnanasekaran Sathiyan, a member of the 2018 and 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medal-winning men’s team, did not make the squad but was selected as a reserve player. All six players were selected for the Indian tennis team at the international level.
Sharath Kamal, the Indian men’s tennis player ranked 40th in the world, Manav Thakkar, the world number 62 and national champion Harmeet Desai. Who is 63rd, will – sing a group of men. Manika Batra, who climbed to the top 24 in the world after her historic run at the Saudi Smash last week, Sreeja Akula, ranked 41st, and Archana Kamath, world 103, will compete in the children’s singles event woman.
Ayhika Mukherjee is the reserve player of the women’s team. Sathiyan and Ayhika will go to Paris but they won’t be in the Sports City. They will be called if there is an injury.
Paris 2024 will be the first time that India will be represented in the singles table tennis event at the Olympics. Men’s and women’s singles events were introduced into the Olympic program in Beijing in 2008.
