Major Dhyan Chand was among India’s fore most sports persons who brought honour and pride for India. It is fitting that our nation’s highest sporting honour will be named after him, the prime minister added.

National Sports Day is celebrated all around the country. On this day, people take a part away from their busy schedules and engage themselves in their favourite sports games. The central government of India and state governments also encourage people to go in the same way.
It is observed as a remembrance of Major Dhyan Chand, who was worldwide popular for his skills in Hockey-that was with the ball and ability to score goals
Major Dhyan Chand, who is also known as the ‘Magician of Hockey’ won three gold medals in the Olympics in 1928, 1932, and 1936. He was the most popular international hero of Hockey during his time.
In his memory, the Indian government honour players with the ‘Dhyan Chand Award’ which is the biggest award in lifetime achievement in sports in India.
