Striker Manisha Kalyan has become the first Indian Woman Football player to play in the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Women’s Champions League when she made her debut for Apollon FC in the European Club competition in Engomi, Cyprus.
Kalyan was restored in Apollon FC in the place of Cyprus’ Marilena Georgiou in the 60th minute at the Makareio Stadium, as Limassol-based club (Apollon) beat Latvian top club SFK Riga 3-0 in their UWCL on Thursday.
Though- She did not kick any goal during the match but made history just after entering the football ground.
Earlier, Manisha, the Hoshiarpur (Punjab) born young player had emerged as the fourth Indian International soccer player signing for an overseas clubwhen she landeda multi-year contract with Limassol, Cyperus-based Apollon Ladies FC in July of this year.
The 20-year-old woman football player had played for India’s women’s national team. She had also played for GokulamKerla (A franchise of the Indian Women’s League). She had come into focus of overseas football clubs when she performed brilliantly against Brazil on their home ground last. After her performance, Cypriot first division club Apollon moved to her and made the announcement for signing her.
She has won the 2020-21 AIFF Women’s Emerging Footballer of the year award.
