Former India captain Kapil Dev believes that the Indian Skipper Rohit Sharma needs to work on his fitness status. Speaking to ABP News, the 1983 World Cup winner said “Rohit looks a bit fat, at least on television”. Kapil also praised former India captain Virat Kohli for maintaining his fitness. He also said that Sharma could take some guidance from his teammate.
Speaking ahead of the 3rd Border- Gavaskar series Test against Australia, Kapil Dev said, “It’s veritably important for any player to be fit. More so for a captain. It’s a shame if you aren’t over the mark as far as your fitness status is there. Rohit has to work hard on his fitness.”
Kapil continued, “Rohit is a great batter but when you talk about his fitness condition, he looks a bit fat, at least on television. Yes, I realize. It’s different when you look at someone on television and in real life. From where I can analyze, Rohit is a great player and captain. but he must achieve fitness. Looking at Virat, whenever we see him, we say, ‘That’s exact fitness!” (Read Also: Women’s T20 World Cup: For India to beat Australia is challenging in the semi-final)
This isn’t the first time Kapil Dev has raised questions about Sharma’s fitness. Last month, the former Indian skipper and all-rounder had said that while the right-handed nature had “no failings”, there was “a huge question mark over his fitness”. “I can comment with a guarantee that there’s a big mistrustfulness regarding Rohit’s fitness. He has faced a lot of reviews for not scoring well since he became the captain. I am agreeing with it, but I don’t believe there’s any issue with his cricketing traits. He’s a successful batter. However, the entire team will rally around him,” Dev had said if he gets fitter.
Under Rohit Sharma’s leadership, India has taken an untouchable 2- 0 lead in the Four-Test Border- Gavaskar series. The team won the institutions against Australia in Nagpur and Delhi with consummate ease. In Nagpur’s first Test, Sharma had smashed a century. He had scored 32 and 31 runs in the two innings of the Delhi Test.
Rohit Sharma will formerly again captain the Indian side for the third Border- Gavaskar Test, starting 1 March at Indore’s Holkar Stadium.
