Veteran Indian women pacer Jhulan Goswami, who is set to take retirement from International matches in the last ODI of India Women vs England Women at Lord’s on September 24, has suggested in-depth scientific research is required to understand the effects of women’s menstrual cycles on an athlete, specifically in cricket where a player has to play on the field for fix long time (six hours).

When I was young and new in team, I couldn’t even discuss this topic. I would just keep it to myself, not tell coaches, quietly fighting through it. People should research properly, lots of science is there, and if we can find a way to adjust during those menstrual cycles during competition, Goswami told former India coach WV Raman on Wednesday in a YouTube channel show.

That is the biggest challenging part for a woman athlete. If it (Periods) came during tournament time, it was a huge challenge to concentrate on your job- you have to be mentally very strong. At that time, it can happen that you are not able to pay attention more, deliver more- and people don’t realise that and start talking ‘arreyaar, isko kya ho gaya? But people don’t understand the background story. This is lot of all women athletes around the world and that’s why they  are special, she adde.

According to a 2021 study on women footballers, determined that fluctuations in reproductive hormones can have an impact on tissues along with muscles, tendons and ligaments. The muscle and tendon harm had been 88% more throughout the overdue follicular length of the menstruation cycle, the time while the mind sends alerts to the ovaries to put together an egg with the intention to be released.

Goswami defined the way it takes outstanding braveness to undergo hormonal adjustments and compete.

It’s one issue going thru the aches and pains of the frame however going thru that sort of ache and adjustments withinside the frame is challenging. During fit days it’s tough, it takes a whole lot of braveness to pop out of that state of affairs, and play for six hours on a cricket subject is a massive task. You need to supply a whole lot of credit scores to all of the ladies going through the one’s challenges. You need to be in a room, getting relaxation however we can’t do that. We can’t be in bed. It’s an vital fit, we need to be available for six hours. We can’t supply excuses and sit. It’s normal – we take delivery of that, and we put it together that way. You can’t supply excuses for that and that’s the splendour for our women athletes, Jhulan said.
