For the first time in the year 1980, an Indian proved his mettle on the badminton court. Prakash Padukone won the All England Open title on 23 March 1980 at Wembley Stadium, England. 24-year-old Prakash became the first Indian to win this title. His achievement was special in every sense for the whole country. For the first time, India had tasted victory at the global level in this game. He won this competition without losing any game. In the final, he defeated Liem Swee for Indonesia 15-3, 15-10.

21 years after Prakash won the All England Open, an Indian won this title again. Pullela Gopichand became the second Indian to win this title. In the final match on 11 March 2001, he won the title by defeating Chen Hong of China 15-12, 15-6. This was the second biggest achievement in the history of Indian badminton.
In 2012, Saina won a medal in the Olympics for the first time.

Former number one badminton player Saina Nehwal had led India for the first time in the Olympics. Nehwal had won a bronze medal in the 2012 London Olympics. She was the first Indian badminton player to win a medal at the Olympics. Earlier in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Saina had lost in the quarter-finals, but in her Olympics she won a medal for the country.
