Indian Women’s Hockey Team to Tour Australia in the upcoming month

The Indian Women’s Hockey Team will travel to Australia in a five-game series from 18-27 May 2023 at Adelaide’s MATE Stadium. India will face Australia in their first three matches of the series, along with 2 matches with Australia A. 

India will have their first match of the tour on May 18, followed by back-to-back matches on May 20 and there on the 21st. Then on 25 May and she will face Australia A on 27 May.

 The Australian women’s hockey team currently ranks third in the world, while the Indian team is eighth. The tour will serve as a warm-up event for the Hangzhou Asian Games, which is from September 23rd to October 8th this year.

Janneke Schopman, head of the Indian women’s team and coach, said the same thing: “More importantly, the series is essential in preparing for the Asian Games in China. It is giving an ideal presence and helps to assess areas in need of improvement or change. Strategically, a very important tour for us.”

India heads to Australia with plenty of confidence after winning their FIH Women’s Cup of Nations final in December 2022, beating host nation Spain. India toured South Africa in January 2023. They played against the hosts in four games, recording 5-1, 7-0, and 4-0 overall victories in their first three games.

However, during the same tour, the Indian team lost their final three matches to the Netherlands 3-1.

 The Indian women’s hockey team beat three-time Olympic champions Australia 1-0 in the quarter-finals of the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games. This was a historic victory for India. India also played hard against Australia in the semi-finals of their 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. They equalized at 1–1 at the end of regular time. However, Australia won 3–0 on penalties to reach the final. The players are currently preparing for the Australian Tour at SAI’s National Senior Coaching Camp in Bengaluru.
