Gautam Gambhir Lashes out on Hero Worship

Former Indian cricketer and part of two-time world champion team Gautam Gambhir have spoken out against the ‘hero worship’ that has long been prevalent in Indian cricket. In a recent interview ahead of the start of Team India`s 2022 T20 World Cup campaign in Australia against arch-rivals Pakistan at the legendary Melbourne Cricket Ground, Gambhir spoke again on the subject, saying that Virat Kohli was a big deal. Gambhir made a statement and compared him to one of his teammates on the World cup squad.

Gambhir mentioned this to Zee during a discussion of India vs Pakistan match happening in Melbourne on 23rd October 2022. He believes fans should start talking about Indian cricket and his team as a unit rather than individual players. According to him, the media of these players and his branding have spread such stories. Gambhir clarified his point by comparing Surya Kumar Yadav to the best cricketers of the Indian team, including Kohli. He explained that Surya Kumar was India’s top player in his T20I format, but fans and media were eyeing Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Because he believes the former social media presence and followers are far less than those of the two cricket veterans.

He said,” Discuss with me Indian cricket. We all must talk about the Indian team. We should end hero worship. It shouldn’t exist at all, but it’s still prevalent because the media brand these players. Surya Kumar Yadav’s performance last year outperformed all six of his batting mates. But you did not ask me a question about him. That’s because they don’t have as many social media followers as other players. Even you initially took the name Virat Kohli instead of Surya Kumar. Probably Rohit Sharma next and then KL Rahul. But based on performance, Surya Kumar and Hardik Pandya were the best Indian team.

As per Gautam Gambhir’s above statement ‘Hero Worshipping’ is restricting teams from winning any ICC Trophy in recent times.
