With half of the electoral college for the upcoming elections of All India Football Federation (AIFF) made up of former players, a maximum of former India International players feel that the ex-Indian captain Bhaichung Bhutia should contest the polls for the post of President.
The Supreme court, afer hearing on Wednesday, approved the timeline prepared by the committee of Administration (CoA) which is currently running the sport in the country, to hold elections on August 28 with the poll process
The Apex Court directed that the above electoral college for the executive committee of the AIFF would have representatives from 36 state-level associations and 36 must include eminent football players including 24 male and at least 12 female.
The above players should have played a minimum of one international level match as a part of the Indian team and should be retired two years prior to the elections notifications date.
Former India captain Bruno Coutinho said it would be good for the country’s football fraternity if the legend Bhutia move on to contest the president post of AIFF. He told to reporters, If Bhutia is nominated for the president post it will spread the good message among the country’s footballers.
It is up to Bhaichung if he wants to participate in elections as well as president post. It will be good for the country’s sports and players as he has strong experience, the former Indian midfielder Renedy Singh is also backing Bhutia.

The 45-years-old Bhutia, Known as the ‘Sikkimese Sniper’ for his goal-scoring prowess and former Indian Captain, is considered one of the country’s greatest footballers. The charismatic striker was the first Indian footballer to have played more than 100 matches for India.
