Dhoni surrendered his position as Test captain to Kohli in 2014 after deciding to retire from the longer game format. However, former Indian Coach R Sridhar recalled Kohli’s strong desire that he should also captain the White Ball format. “There was a moment in 2016when Virat was desperate to captain the white ball team. He stated some things that showed he was so keen for a captaincy.”
Sridhar explained in his new book, “Coaching Beyond – My Days with India Cricket Team” written by R Kaushik. Sridhar also shared how then-India head coach Ravi Shastri stepped in, telling Kohli to wait for Dhoni to present the responsibility of the white ball captaincy. “You must respect it. He will also give it to you in Limited Match Cricket when the time is right. If you don’t respect him now, as captain you won’t earn the respect of your team tomorrow. Respect him now, no matter what. It will come to you; you must not run after it.” Dhoni not only handed him over but also played under him for several years. Dhoni finally announced his retirement from international cricket on 15 August 2020.
