A Clash the Industry Didn’t Ask For
The possibility of two mega-scale, mass-driven films arriving on the same Friday has triggered serious concern within the trade. Both Dhurandhar 2 and Toxic rank among the most anticipated releases of the year, cater to a similar audience, and run for over three hours each. For exhibitors, the clash is less about excitement and more about logistics and losses.
Patna exhibitor Kumar Abhishek voices a sentiment shared widely across circuits. “How can we accommodate two such huge films on the same Friday? Both are audience favourites. One stars the KGF hero, while the other is a sequel to one of the biggest hits of all time. With such long runtimes, it’s impossible to give both films the showcase they deserve,” he says.
Dhurandhar 2 Stands Firm on March 19
Amid rumours of release-date reshuffles, one thing is absolutely clear: Dhurandhar 2 is not moving. A source close to director Aditya Dhar categorically denied reports of postponement. “The release is 100 percent on. March 19 is final and irrevocable. False stories about a delay are being planted to downplay the film. Similar rumours were spread even before the first part released,” the source revealed.
With Dhurandhar 2 locked in, trade circles believe Toxic may be the film that eventually opts for a different release window.
Why the Clash Makes Little Business Sense
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh feels the head-on collision should ideally be avoided. “The March 19 clash between Toxic and Dhurandhar 2 is counterproductive in pure business terms. Both films are hard-hitting, mass spectacles aimed at the same core audience—single screens and mass belts. A direct clash will only split footfalls and damage both films instead of allowing either to maximise its potential.”
He further explains the exhibition challenges. “Single screens and mass multiplexes cannot support two large-scale films simultaneously, especially when they feature two massively popular stars—Yash after KGF 2 and Ranveer Singh after Dhurandhar. One film will inevitably dominate screen count, while the other will be pushed to fewer shows, particularly in interior markets.”
Why One Smart Move Can Help Both Films
In today’s box-office environment, opening weekends are everything. “A clash weakens opening numbers, affects perception, and stalls momentum,” Adarsh notes. “Instead of one film owning the narrative—across social media, trade chatter, and audience buzz—the attention gets divided.”
He also points out that March 19 carries holiday and festive potential across multiple circuits. “A solo release would fully capitalise on that advantage. If even one of the two films shifts, both will benefit. A smart release strategy today isn’t about ego or bravado—it’s about maximising theatrical value.”
The Bigger Picture
Beyond numbers, there’s also the issue of audience fatigue. Two intense, three-hour-plus mass entertainers arriving together could overwhelm viewers, forcing them to choose one over the other—or postpone watching either. In a market where word of mouth travels fast and first impressions are crucial, giving each film its own breathing space could make a significant difference.
For now, Dhurandhar 2 remains firmly anchored to March 19. Whether Toxic decides to blink first will determine if the industry witnesses a costly clash—or a calculated move that ultimately allows both films to emerge stronger at the box office.
