Cricket Australia Introduces Draft System To Pick Overseas Players In BBL 12

Cricket Australia, introduces a new draft system similar to what IPL currently has in place, to pick overseas player for the 12th edition of the Big Bash League. (BBL-12)

Last year it wasn’t the case during the KFC BBL and in order to let the players feature themselves clubs would negotiate with them or their agents directly. But from now on, Cricket Australia has decided to let all the overseas players those who want to get featured inside the tournament, will have to go through a new draft system, having four categories Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze. The players those who will be selected under the platinum category should expect a price value higher to those in categories Gold, Silver and Bronze.

As the BBL is scheduled in December this year, yet the BBL new draft is to be announced including the broadcaster details.

The main objective of this new draft system from BBL-12 is to recruit the best available oversease players into this competition. Since past few years, the BBL management has been under constant scanner, getting criticized for their inabilities to attract eligible and the biggest global cricket players. However, in order to rectify their mistake, the BBL management has this time have taken this move to adapt the draft system, similar to what IPL has, to attract the best global international cricketers for the Big Bash League 2022, December to January window.

How will this draft system work?

Consisting of four rounds each club/franchise will have to make a minimum two picks and a maximum of 3. Secondly, like a snake format, the club that will make its two picks in the first round will be given the chance to pick three players in the second round.

The BBL – 12, 2022 (Big Bash league) consists of 8 teams named as:
  • Hobart Hurricanes
  • Adelaide Strikers
  • Brisbane Heat
  • Melbourne Renegades
  • Melbourne Stars
  • Sydney Thunders
  • Sydney Sixers
  • Perth Scorchers
