For the first time, A lower 152 ranking player Borna Coric won the Western & Southern (Cincinnati)men’s open title on Sunday. He defeated the world’s fifth-ranking tennis star Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-6, 6-2. In the women’s final, the French star Caroline Garcia registered a historic win of a WTA 1000 title with 6-2, 6-4 against Petra Kvitova. Before Gracia, no qualifier had won a WTA 1000 title since the tier was created in 2009.

Coric, the maiden master of Cincinnati earlier defeated the world’s third number, Rafael Nadal in a previous match on Thursday, August 18. In that match, Coric took over Nadal in two sets 711– 69, 4-6, 6-3. After winning the match against Nadal, he got all attention of world tennis fans as well as experts. He repeated his performance in the final against Greek champion Tsitsipas.

 The Croatian lower ranking player dispatched the Greek top-seeded champion 7-6, 6-2 and became the lowest ranked to ever lift a Master Trophy.

I was not ready for this speech five days ago- as I thought, I was going to lose in the first round, Coric said in a post-match speech having a master trophy in his hand.

On the other hand, in Women’s single, Gracia registered a history at Center Court of Cincinnati. She became the first qualifier to win WTA 1000 title as she took over Czech’s Kvitova. The-28-year-old tennis who was on 35 ranking before above win, for the first time since 2017 is now set to make her place in Top 20.

  • In the quarter, he stunned Felix Auger 6-4, 6-4
  • In the semi-final, he defeated Cameron Norrie 6-3, 6-4
