Indian shuttler HS Prannoy defeated compatriot Lakshya Sen in the round of 16 (pre-quarter-final) at the BWF World Championship 2022 and qualified for the quarter-final vs Chinese JP Zhao, and in the men’s double, D. Kapila and Arjun MR won the match against Singaporean pair of KH Loh and H Terry inthe round of 16, while another Indian pair S. Rankireddy and C. Shetty upset Danish Players J. Bay and L. Molhede, and became a hope for India to lift the championship trophy. On the other hand, in women’s singles, Sania Nehwal lost the 16-round game vs Thai star B. Ongbamrungphan and missed the world championship opportunity.
Prannoy defeated Sen in two rounds of three set games as 17-21, 21-16, 21-17.In the first set, he was very down as Sen took over him by 21-17. But in the situation of doing or die, he took attacking form at the start of the second set and trounced compatriot Sen by 21-16. He performed brilliantly against Common wealth 2022 gold medalist in the third set and finally, won the match 17-21, 21-16, 21-17.
Earlier, Prannoy defeated Japanese World No. 2 KentoMomota on Wednesday. He will now face Chinese JP Zhao in the quarter-final on Friday. Zhao has won the qualifying match against Indian badminton star Srikanth Kidambi. Now, Prannoy has a chance to trounce Zhao and take revenge from India’s side in the men’s single of the BWF World Championship.
In the men’s double, the Indian duoS.Ranikereddy and C. Shetty registered a straight win over Danish players J Bay and L Molhede 21-12, 21-10 in the pre-quarterfinal battle, while D. Kapila and Arjun MR dominated over Singaporean KH Loh and his mate H Terry 18-21, 21-15, 21-16. Kapila and Arjun were slow in the first set, but they bounced back in the second set with a win and were continue in the form and won the third set 18-21, 21-15, 21-16.
Saina Nehwal, who was hope from India’s side in the women’s single after retiring PV Sindhu, lost the chance for the semi-finals of the world championship. She had got a free pass to enter the quarter-final after retiring Japanese star Okuhara, but she could not do well in the quarter-final against B Ong. She lost the match 17-21, 21-16, 13-21.
