Many were left intrigued by the absence of the DRS system in the Ranji Trophy tournament. The match we are talking about here was about the final match between Mumbai and Madhya Pradesh. The main topic of DRS coming into light was only due to the life that was given to him even after it was clear that he was out. He survived the close call made by the MP pacer Gaurav who made an appeal for an LBW.
Now whether this call will prove to be fatal or not will get decided in the matter of next 4 days. Now what the problem when the BCCI has all the power and money to rectify the issue?
Yes, there is a problem and BCCI says “We believe in our umpires” and adding further they said, ‘Its time we trust the umpires” which in other words means we (BCCI) have money to spend on such high tech and costlier technology to spend in the matches like the Ranji.
The current DRS system in Ranji is sort of half cooked meal which doesn’t have Ultra-edge and Hawkeye technology comprising in it. Then how can the decision that you and me are expecting can be accurate. Look at what BCCI had to say below,
“It’s an expensive exercise to use the DRS. The costs shoot up. How does it matter if there’s no DRS in the final”
They added further,
“India’s two best umpires (KN Ananthapadmanabhan & Virendra Sharma) are officiating this game. And what the end result? If you use it in the final, you will want it to introduce it in the league stage of the Ranji Trophy too”
They also further added by saying,
“The rigging (wiring) and derigging of all equipement will be extremely costly. Hawkeye means extra camera needed. Ranji is done with limited equipment. The argument then will be that why not for all televised games. Look, you can’t have a half-baked DRS. The last time, it was used for limited replays to see if there’s and edge or not. You can’t use the ball trajectory –a critical element of DRS”
So, by this communication BCCI source made with the team of TOI says clearly about the intentions. It could be monetary, or could be conflict that probably would erupt due to use of DRS system and neglecting the rights of a on-field umpire. Definitely, having a DRS system in place wouldn’t be a problem for the BCCI to implement and cash-on but the major problem that needs to be addressed is about whether these high-tech gadgets will take place of the traditional umpiring system leaving the umpires unemployed in the future.
