The captain of the Indian national team, Rohit Sharma has rubbished all the speculations of the workload caused due to excessive cricket, calling it utterly non-sense. As the T20 formats are growing with each new day, speculations have also increased whether ODI or test format will see light in the future. Recently, the English team’s T20I captain, Ben Stokes, took a complete retirement from the ODI format and left the whole world in confusion, asking themselves, why? But in response, Ben stokes explained himself calling all his cricketing schedule as ‘Unsustainable’.
I can’t give my team-mates 100% of myself in this format anymore. This has been an incredibly tough decision to make. I have loved every minute of playing with my mates for England. We have had an incredible journey on the way.
As hard as a decision as this was to come to, it’s not as hard dealing with the fact I can’t give my teammates 100% of myself in this format anymore. The England shirt deserves nothing less from anyone who wears it.
Three formats are just unsustainable for me now. Not only do I feel that my body is letting me down because of the schedule and what is expected of us, but I also feel that I am taking the place of another player who can give Jos and the rest of the team their all. It’s time for someone else to progress as a cricketer and make incredible memories like I have over the past 11 years,
But after the statement was made, it seemed that the situation got more aggravated than getting resolved in other words making the situation even worse for the future of the One-day game. But the cricketer rubbished al these speculations stating,
Mera naam hi one-day cricket se bana hai, sab bekar ki baatein hai, (I made my mark in ODIs, the talk is nonsense),
He further added,
People were earlier talking about Test cricket. For me, cricket is important — whatever be the format. I would never say that ODI is getting finished or T20 is getting finished or Tests are nearing an end. I wish there is another format as well, because for me, playing the game is most important. Since childhood, we dreamt of playing the game for India and whenever we play ODIs, stadiums are full, the excitement remains high. It’s an individual choice as to which format to play or not, but for me, all three formats are important,
So, it seems that the captain is clear headed of what he’s saying and has no problem continuing the three formats including IPL. As per him, only time will decide how things will turn but currently for him and his team (Indian Cricket) the situation remains the same. He said,
The guys are getting exposure and our aim is to create bench strength, so that’s why in Zimbabwe, there are a lot of players who are touring for the first time – be it Shahbaz Ahmed, Rahul Tripathi – and it is a good exposure.
